I, too, love books of Robin Hobb.

I’m glad you love Robin Hobb’s books. But I’ve never heard of them. What is the connection to today’s strip?

Basically the whole plot of the entire series wouldn’t have happened if a.) royals stopped producing bastard children or b.) royals would actually occasionally acknowledge their bastard children.

Also all bastard children were called Fitz<insert Father’s name here> (the main character was called FitzChivalry) – like FitzGlamor above

Oh well that’s historical. From the wikipedia article: "Revival
From the Stuart era (1603–1714) and later, a pseudo-Anglo-Norman usage of Fitz was adopted for younger sons of the British royal family who lacked a legal surname, and particularly for illegitimate children of kings, princes, or general upper class men, for example Fitzroy, (meaning "son of the king", from the French fils du roy); Fitzjames, son of king James II (1685–1688); FitzClarence, son of the Duke of Clarence, later King William IV (1830–1837); and FitzGeorge, son of Prince George, Duke of Cambridge (1819–1904). More generally, in literature the prefix Fitz has been used to connote nobility, for example in Anthony Trollope’s 1862 novel Orley Farm which features the fictional rakishly aristocratic figure Lord John Fitzjoly."

Every day you’ll learn something new. But the books are awesome! I recommend highly to read them all, if you just have time. Farseer Trilogy is the first one.

"Not Easy" Green. As in, too green for Human and not green enough for Orc.

Maybe she can pass herself off as a half-elf ..?

Maybe something like Glon’s colour on this strip:

          https://yafgc.net/comic/0300-night-of-the-living-glon/

Perhaps a bit lighter, in case they get darker as they grow older.

I think it was How Green is my Mutant, and it was either a Metamorphosis Alpha or Gamma World article.

I’m sensing a pattern here… a lot of Human/Orc Hybrids popping up across the era(s)

also, t’would seem half the "T"s have gone on strike

    • Mathias
      July 28, 2018, 3:46 am | # | Reply

I just remembered that this was Gruumsh’s plan all along… Still a pattern though, even through god-like intervention

        July 29, 2018, 3:52 am | # | Reply

I have to wonder though, if every half-orc was orchestrated by Gruumsh. Given human tendencies to bone almost anything as noted below, surely there are a few that are a product of nature rather than manipulation?

(Admittedly, one born to a reigning monarch on either side does smack of interference…)

    • Yah
      July 28, 2018, 4:48 am | # | Reply

To be fair, humans are notoriously willing to bone anything considering we always seem to be able to hybrid with anything in fantasy worlds, and if an orc country is right next door well that means more opportunity to run into and bone each other than a human would with say, a drider.

That’s always been my theory on why so many monsters and aliens in sci-fi and fantasy are always trying to conquer/abduct humans – the versatility of our DNA makes us the best, most adaptable breeding stock in the Known Universe. Of course, we also come with a side of genetic crazy that often make any healthy hybrids very, very dangerous.

Love Elixir; the ancestor/plot device of every halfbreed and hybrid in any fantasy world, conveniently called “Love Elixir” in Xanth even though the effects wear off after “woo-hoo.”

Coincidentally Piers Anthony has a creepy obsession with underage sex… *cringe*

"When we could no longer hide the pregnancy the people seemed to assume it was mine. And I gave them no cause to think otherwise."

Reminds me of "The general naturally assumed the child was his, and I made no attempt to correct him"

      August 2, 2018, 8:23 pm | # | Reply

Now that you mention it, it really parallels Glon’s story, doesn’t it?

There’s also "There was no denying that kid’s heritage when she was born though!" – "It was clear the child was no pure orc", and how neither child was likely to be accepted.
