I’m now looking forward to seeing Eldwig attempt to drive the cart off, only to have his head caved in with a bucket by Flannet (or something along those lines)…..
I wonder. It’s there anything that could still plausibly give any credit to that scumbag?
I mean, yeah, I’m aware that not all people on the "good side" are good, and that desperate times can change people completely, but it’s there anything that might excuse this guy’s actions?
One one hand, you might argue that slavery is better than death, but then you see the look on his face when he tried to order Flannet. No, the husband is petty and selfish, and I suspect doomed. By making him such a selfish jerk, Rich saves us from having to feel sympathetic when he eventually is killed.
Imagine if the boy and his mother were in fact polymorphed monsters. Or doppelgangers. And keeping up the act to make bystanders appear sympathetic towards them.
I mean, it’s really strange for such an obviously unlikable disgusting character to appear in the story. It’s just too obvious.
I’m waiting for the plot twist to happen.
Only thing I can think of is he seriously hates his nagging wife and disobedient brat of a child. Sure the child is protecting his mother but he could just be a Mamma’s boy and ignores everything his father says which is why the father would rather leave the boy behind. And the mother could be one of those doting mothers that only ever sees the good in the boy and any time the father tries to discipline him, she gets angry at him (the father) and yells at him to stop. This does NOT excuse his actions however and is purely conjecture on my part. For all we know, the boy could even be a bastard child born from an affair and he found out only recently and has been trying to get rid of the unfaithful woman. There are so many scenarios to choose from for why the father is ditching the family but the most likely one is that he’s a big coward and a scumbag and would rather save his own hide and run away than help others.
All those other scenarios STILL make him a big coward and a scumbag. You want to leave your family, look them in the eye and LEAVE. Don’t scurry away and leave them in the hands of slavers, hoping they’ll never return and your problem will be solved.
…yes, we know that. In a chaotic fight on a dark night, where the kid would have needed to be supernaturally quick on the uptake to realize which of the scary ladies in black were abducting his mom, and which were unexpectedly helping her.
So "good boy" for courage and intentions, and "here’s a copy of the cast page, kid" for telling who is who. "We order them from a librarian in Tempul. He sends us weekly updates."
Rancourt, in the last strip, encouraged us to:
"Think about the mark tonight will leave upon poor Phillippa and Louis. You could say that it was good to learn this about Eldwig, certainly, but Iām thinking about how they must feel, right now."
I can’t imagine this behaviour comes as a complete shock to them. A friend once told me, "People *show* you who they are, every day."
As his family, they might have wanted to ignore the signs. But now, the spotlight is full-bore, impossible to ignore.
His abandoning them to jump on the wagon might not even raise the eyebrows over their fully-opened eyes, at this point. Because Mom has been severely beaten – and I bet you anything she took that beating for defending her son, who is, even now, *not* going to go quietly, again as Rancourt indicated.
The wife looks a lot younger than the husband to me. I wonder if she is some sort of trophy wife for a rich older man and the son hers from a previous marriage. That would explain the dad’s staggering lack of concern for his family
Ouch, kid isn't paying too much attention to the fight is he, or he might notice that *this* mistress is one of the new arrivals that are attacking the other ones.
It was also her who got the stone on her head, she seems to be the less lucky one of the two.
Depends. Don’t the Dark Mistresses enjoy pain? Arguably that would make her the more lucky one š
This is exactly what I was thinking!
I’m now looking forward to seeing Eldwig attempt to drive the cart off, only to have his head caved in with a bucket by Flannet (or something along those lines)…..
"I like your swing, boy, but now’s not the time for sexy business!"
š
"Oh! You know I like the rough stuff!"
Two Dark Mistresses there seriously reconsidering turning Good I’d guess
Kick the coward to the kerb! (if there are no kerbs, invent one and kick him to it š )
Okay, formally retract _any_ good thoughts I had for the father

We don’t really know anything about any of the three, so I’m withholding judgement. It’s hard, though.

That’s 1 terrible father.
Dark Mistress: "Oooh! I like him! He’s a keeper!"
Good boy! š
You realise he whacked the good DM, right?
I think they like that sort of thing anyway. It’s part of their initiation š
I do realize that. He’s trying to protect his mom. Therefore he is a good boy.
He whacked the DM who is also helping his mom

Dad is too cowardly to help.
Son is too active to realise he’s not helping.
What a family. Poor mum!
And remember that this arc is called the boy.
Darkest clouds are seeing in the far.
On the other side there are a woman who is mother of three great heroes and was very good in the criance and grow of two of them

t!
Kid knows that DMs consider such things to be foreplay, right?
Actually, could be the entire point.
Too young, but still a funny thought.
