You know the situation is bad when seeing Drow makes you feel hope for the world again…

They are part of the natural order of things, for better and for worse. What’s happening to the world at the moment… is not.

      Besides, #teamwolf, amirite? 😉

Well, if you needed one particular Drow to help repopulate the entire tribe, definitely good news that Wolf survived. Have always wondered if somehow he and Lolth managed to produce a child before Lolth was consumed.

I don’t think Lolth was consumed. The last time we’ve seen her was when she fought the Beholder King and escaped back to her own dimension.

Can’t call it "Black Mountain" anymore. Black Valley? Black Crater? The Abyss of Despair?

How about, "The Crater that was Formerly the Location of Black Mountain, but was Destroyed in a Giant Explosion."

So the Queen can’t see a thing.
This leaves me with a question: Is that really wolf she is talking to?
Or is it just her imagination and Wolf is dead?
I somehow believe Wolf is dead.

I still Arachne may be exactly where she needs to be.

This is my first time commenting, but I think something like my third time rereading the archives to this comic, and I just wanted to take a moment to say how much I love it. The sketch-like art style really appeals to me, but besides that I’m always impressed at the range of emotion that you’re able to project onto people’s faces. (I’ve commented to a friend one one occasion that Caelin is my favourite character because he often makes that one face…)

More generally, though, I find the story in this comic to be simply masterful. The pacing is well done, and the characters are interesting in spite of their multitude. I am especially enamoured of the fact that no plot thread or character ever seems to be forgotten, but they always make their way back into future stories. Most importantly, I think, is the rather unusual inclination to make permanent changes and upheavals. In a world where long-running serials bow universally to the status quo, it’s really striking to see someone willing to kill off major characters, topple regimes, or literally destroy the most important setting in the story. Besides the fact that this means that the serial never grows old and tiring, it also puts more at stake in any given plot. I remember first seeing the Black Mountain explode and feeling shock and dismay… but then I thought, "what happens next?", and I think this is critical to a good story.

In conclusion—keep up the good work.

THANK YOU! Sometimes I fear I’ve gone too far with some things, but despite the occasional unhappy reaction, there’s always you wonderful readers to remind me that change is good, growth is good, and I am reminded that the right thing for YAFGC is to keep it evolving, changing and progressing. Welcome and thank you!!

Yeah, I really like how YAFGC isn’t afraid to shake up the status quo. I love watching characters grow and evolve. For example, I’ve loved seeing Glon go from being a disgruntled kid to a badass family man and ruler. And I’m excited for the potential to see, in the future, what his kids become like.

It’s really been amazing to watch this world grow and evolve. It’s an incredibly unique experience that you don’t find much in any medium. We already have a second generation of "heroes" with Sittica, Yapp and Ain (who I’ve also loved watching grow up) along with Bob2 and eventually Glon’s babies! I can’t wait until they have their own big adventure!

A world without Change is a world that has gone stagnant. Yeah, that’s even true in real life. For better or worse, Change is necessary.

Yes, I’m having problems with the cast page and the archives page. I’m in research to try to repair it. Please hang in there and bear with me, I’m not a real tech-savvy guy, so it’s a slow process.

I’m suspicious of the featureless black background… it’s a common trick for out-of-body experiences in a few comics I read.
So… either Wolf is alive and Neph isn’t, Neph is alive and Wolf isn’t or they’re both in a purgatory or I’m reading too much into the empty blackness of the background…

It doesn’t help, the way Wolf says "…okay." Like he knows it’s not really okay.

i dunno if they were death or in purgatory why would wolf then talk about a healer, shoulden’t they be without wounds then?

      September 7, 2017, 3:01 pm | # | Reply

Wolf could still be dead, and Nephilia injured but alive…in which case either Wolf’s ghost (if he’s real, even in spirit) or Neph’s subconscious (if she’s dreaming him) might have heard the healer speaking.

However, I do think they’re both alive. The featureless black background just reflects how bleak their situation is…as well as setting the actual scene as some dark cavern beneath what was, until recently, Black Mountain.

The title is ‘Down In The Deep Dark’. Sure, the caverns have always been portrayed with one light source, or another, even down there, but that big a magical explosion no doubt knocked out all magical light sources, and the physical explosion would have knocked out most non-magical ones. Sure, there is fire, but you need something to burn, and you have to be really careful that the fire doesn’t eat the air you need to breath. So I imagine they are not using lights unless they REALLY have to, so right now, it really is the ‘Deep Dark’.

And of course metaphorically it reflects her blindness, and the direness of their situation, so appropriate from all angles. 🙂

The Drow numbers were already reduced from the orc war. Now there are barely any survivors at all. Will they go extinct entirely?

The drow under the Black Mountain aren't *all* of the drow, they are only one group. There are lots more drow elsewhere, so they don't have to worry about that.
