Oh I don’t know, back in Washington’s day, it was common to enlist foreigners who didn’t speak English and didn’t know what they were signing, drunks who likewise were too inebriated to understand what they were agreeing to, and to falsely accuse men of crimes and offer them their choice of prison time or military service.
It comes as a surprise to Americans today, proud of the country it eventually became, but there was a lot less motivation to join an army intending to fight your relatives for the glorious cause of a few wealthy landowners who didn’t want to pay taxes to England, than is usually depicted in period books/movies/etc of the time period (or in history texts used in US schools, for that matter).
