Back to combining with sketches again?

Just for this strip. I not only am in the middle of my fulltime job, but after I’d done the rough I moved my studio stuff to the basement (so the kids could use the living room for virtual school during the new lockdown here), in the shuffle I misplaced the roughs that I’d already scanned and in the interest of expedience, I just touched up the rough sketch in Photoshop before uploading. The rest of the week’s updates are more standard YAFGC style.

Man, the baron even looks like the late Sorrell Booke in this page. So does he have an assistant saying "Coo coo coo!"?

    Baron Hoggs seems sketchy

Is that the way a baron (lowest noble) is allowed to adress a duke (highest noble)?
I know our duke is more easygoing but I in his place would put the baron in irons and send him to the cpital so he can’t interfere in the investigation.

Actually, the highest noble is the king. Then come Archdukes, then Dukes, etc.

I bet he’s just worried that "Them Duke Boys" are causing trouble again.

Wouldn’t highest noble be the Emperor? Not that the hierarchy would be completely standardized.

And there are certainly lower nobles than baron as well. Although probably without own land.

Okay for historical re-enactment reasons I actually have a list of the Order of Precedence for Victorian England, a popular basis for fictional royalty. But remember, storytellers are ALLOWED TO MAKE THINGS UP, ok? Rich can do what he wants. It’s The Law.
          The Sovereign
          Archbishop
          Duke
          Marquis
          Earl (in England), or
          Count (in Europe)
          Viscount
          Bishop
          Baron
          Knight of the Garter
          Chancellor
          Vice-Chancellor
          Baronet
          Knight

Note the actual list is 2 pages long & includes each type of lord, ‘master of,’ ‘champion of,’ ‘secretary of,’ etc., a dozen kinds of knights, every title’s male children by birth order, plus political, military, and religious leaders & officers. Females are on a separate list.

Also, there are times where you do speak that bluntly, to remind someone with power about the rules they would otherwise ignore as beneath them. Power creep being something of a constant feature in society.

I love the way Richard wrote this, because, even though his demeanour is unpleasant, *Boz didn’t say anything wrong*.

It’s not like a military hierarchy. He’s on his own land. If he’s directly feal to the King, then only the King is above him. He’s obviously not feal to the Duchy of Greyfort.

I find it interesting how some of the comments are about hierarchy and fealty and how the Baron wouldn’t act that way towards a Duke. In real life, this is very true. However, this is Rich’s world. The hierarchy system may be different in his world.

That being said, cookies for all!!

Actually, even in real life, it was not at all unusual for a lower ranked noble to have more real power and influence than a noble further up the order of precedence, and to behave accordingly. Now, baron to duke is a bit of a stretch, to be sure, especially when the duke in question is a royal favourite, but if that ginormous cathedral they’re standing beside is any indication, the baron’s lands are pretty wealthy …

    re: Hierarchy

As I understand from my discussions with Rich about this, in this Kingdom the paradigm is similar to a ship or a plane:

The Duke would outrank the Baron anywhere else, but his own Barony, the Baron is in charge.

As he correctly asserts in Panel Five.

HA HA! Awe thats cute a Baron trying to flex on a duke (by rank this is like a Army Captian giving a general a direct order*)

*excluding doctors as a doctor can give an order to any officer regardless of rank in medical situations

And The Doctor can give orders even when it’s not a medical emergency 😛

Love how Baz’s attitude aligns with Boss Hogg’s too lol and Rich, you did a wonderful portrayal of him artistically too. All he s expressions spot on. I just wanna hug him and pinch his cheeks!

I am waiting for the chase scene to come, where the Duke escapes from the baddies by jumping his wagon over a creek at a washed out bridge.

Damn, this one is sketchy. This baron isn't exactly making friends, is he?
