Could there be a word missing in the speech balloon of the Captain?

Would the word "lying" be missing of that left most bubble? I do think it does.
    Bernard, that’s a rescuer – the memories…

Yeah, that took me a minute to make sure my eyes weren’t messing with me, but there is definitely a word missing.

If he doesn’t have a girlfriend mouse named Bianca someplace, I’ll be MOST disappointed!

He must be telling the truth. As Bernard’s name is listed under characters.

Which begs the question; Is Bernard always a mouse?

If that’s some sort of pet mouse, that explains why it hasn’t scurried away into hiding when the humans started looking at it.

Huh. The captain went directly to "lying" instead of "something mucked with the anti-magic bubble."

        Interesting.

Why do you both feel that this would be the more natural direction for her thoughts to take her?

I would guess that is has to do with the Abbot’s oblivious, self-centered personality, and how CPT Carruthers’ response "seems" to ignore that in favor of assuming direct deception on his part. He seems to mean well, but he has overly focused on how the murder has impacted the abbey, the tournament, and his favorite instrument, to the point where he has all but ignored Taurenil as a distinct person. The Abbot clearly doesn’t like unpleasantness in his life, and all but flees attempts to discuss the sordid aspects of the case… but that isn’t remotely the same as lying. Also, if he was lying, why draw attention to mouse-repelling antimagic fields at all? Mice are everywhere, why provoke her suspicion? So, I could see someone expecting her to challenge the idea that the antimagic field was still operational, but not expecting her to assume outright deceit.

On the other hand, CPT Carruthers clearly views all parties she meets as potential suspects until she sees evidence otherwise (unlike certain RL parties, she actually WILL change her mind in the face of evidence). The fact that the Abbot knew details of Taurenil’s altercations with the other guests and omitted to tell CPT Carruthers does, thinking back, suggest why she might think he is being deliberately obstructive.

A magnificent example of ‘that’s such a dumb thing it can’t be a lie, you’d have made up a better lie’

Missing followup: "And he’s not a problem." *Bernard takes an indignant pose with a "hmmphh"*

To be clear, his reaction is to reading Cpt Carruthers’ lips and that inappropriate pointing. He couldn’t have heard/seen the abbott’s response. Though his pointing is obviously not antagonistic.

Why would he take an indignant pose? He couldn’t hear Carruther.

      …unless:
"How could he understand what I said if he’s deaf?"
"He is a lip reader, duh."

Because she’s law enforcement. This may be a surprise, but people lie to LEO’S. Constantly. So LEO’S learn to expect people to lie.

"Everyone lies. Murderers lie because they have to; witnesses and other participants lie because they think they have to; everyone else lies for the sheer joy of it, and to uphold a general principle that under no circumstances do you provide accurate information to a cop."

You overlook those that think they are telling the truth, but have either been misled, or just have an inaccurate memory. Then there is a small minority who are actually accurately representing the reality of the situation, but you will never know it because their information is swamped under a ton of lies, inaccuracies, unconscious bias, etc.

And someone like the Abbot, who (if we take him at his word) is having trouble providing accurate testimony because there are places his mind is avoiding.
