And the winner of the Oscar for Parent of the Year goes to….

Consider the alternative: if daddy hadn’t sold them, they would be dead, or worse, this way, they are at least alive

Well seeing that there is an afterlife in this world, it may not be that simple.

And who is currently in control of the afterlife in this world?
Like I said ‘dead, or worse’

how long would they remain alive under rannite torture etc? nah i agree with Jonathan- dude’s a dirtbag

That’s what the dad saved them from: the Rannite’s don’t need to torture them now, they already own them

And never said daddy wasn’t a dirtbag (he _was_ only thinking of saving his own neck afterall), just that the alternative is so much worse

And with nothing to say or contribute, once again Guesticus argues for the sake of arguing.

Come now, Rich, he has no idea what you’re talking about.

He has no idea what anyone is talking about. Ever.

The Dark Mistresses don’t get character IDs?

      February 18, 2020, 1:55 am | # | Reply

Must have been an omission. Their names are…

…huh. You’re right. They managed to ascend from nameless extras to regular cast members, without ever shedding the "nameless" bit.

I wonder if they’re stealing a trick from Daigo and Kazumi over in Order of the Stick, and saving their names for a real emergency?

Was going to give them temporary names, except the boy is already using one of them πŸ™

Considering how few of them have any personality traits beyond the typical Dark Mistress persona after conversion, they essentially ARE faceless goons. They don’t need real names.

Pretty sure that Nathanael was talking about Flannet’s two Dark Mistress roadies, who do have personalities, but not yet names. (They’ve presumably given Flannet their names, or at least the names they choose to tell her, but not on-panel.)

I wonder if Rich has left them nameless because one or both are actually someone the readers would know?

At least one of the Rannites’ mistresses has a name.
The poor one with the broken leg is called "Ula".

It really drives home just how much strength of character someone like C’rhynne, or young Louis here, has.

Ranna’s corrupting effect, even indirectly manifest through minions, is formidable indeed. Yes, some folks have precious little standing between them and…the sort of decision Eldwig just made, but Ranna has a real gift for gaming the odds and grooming the setup to leave a trail of horrible, soul-crushing deeds in her wake, in which she simply set the stage, adjusted the lighting, but in the end, the decisionmaker chose for him- or herself, and owns the weight upon his or her conscience.

Think about the mark tonight will leave upon poor Phillippa and Louis. You could say that it was good to learn this about Eldwig, certainly, but I’m thinking about how they must feel, right now. That poor boy, trying to stand between Ranna’s minions and his mother, probably knows he’s unlikely to win, and that trying will "make it worse." But he has to try. One does not go quietly into a night this dark and terrible, even if one knows one cannot help but go into it anyway.

She really is an artist, Ranna. I don’t like her work, but I recognize the craftsmanship inherent in it. Coming out of even a tangential brush with her minions requires…what gamers of my generation might call a "saving throw."

The kid is Louis? Wasn’t sure, normally someone is called ‘the Younger’ if the parent share’s the name (eg Pitt the Elder and Pitt the Younger)
Was thinking the father was Louis the Younger with the kid being Eldwig

People, in situations like this, tend to fight back for two reasons: they have nothing left and they know they are going to lose so why not do as much damage before the end? or they simply don’t know any better
The dad knew better, and knew he was too old to do anything, so he chose what many would consider ‘the easy out’: just give in and accept the inevitable

The Rannite’s seem to respect ‘spirit’, so the kid would probably be groomed (or brainwashed or whatever) into being a foot soldier, maybe even given a position of power eventually

I fear it missed all of the salient points I made, so its utility to ‘splain’ is rather marginal at best. Still, credit where due for effort! How fortunate I am to have the benefit of someone so willing to break down the things I say into bites easily digestible by even myself.

That’s because it wasn’t explaining what you said ‘into bites easily digestible’

My ‘mistake’ was combining two separate comments

Please, please tell me Ula is not named for a Jeff Wayne sound effect.

Jeff Wayne is the guy who wrote the soundtrack to "War of the Worlds" (not the original version)

Didn’t say I looked _that_ up, it was a tangent inspired by the comment and thought it would have been a great pun, except you missed a prime opportunity
