3455 A Woman Who Knows Not Of Sarcasm
on May 19, 2021
Characters: Abbott Heigh, Cadugan, Captain Ajira, Captain Lilianne Carruthers, Lexa Dumas, Lucas Greyfort, Sulaaf al'Shamshir
Location: Abbey of St. Aldwin the Skilled
Ugh. Lots of errors on that one. Fixed them all (I think). My world has gotten strange and busy with COVID lockdown, fulltime job, home schooling… cabin feverish family… awkghsahhgehh…
First panel: “Would it be fair and reasonable to say – given your husband, the Duke’s familial ties to the accused –, that you both desire and expect her to be vindicated?”
Took me a while to parse that sentence, especially with that spelling error.
My tired eyes can’t see it.
Any thoughts on what he might have said if not stopped?
Something along the lines of her being lax in her duties.
An insult for which she Will Not Stand.
t!
Something life threatening from the way she’s reaching for her sword
BTW
In the 3rd panel I’d guess that it should be ‘SEEM’ there not ‘See’
> Something life threatening from the way she’s reaching for her sword
I only noticed the second time: *She’s not the only one!*
Beautiful work, Rich.
t!
😀 The Kingswords’ gots duty too.
2 things.
1- lexa dumas. I just noticed the full name. Nice!!! I’ve no idea if i’m reading more into it, but still… Nice!
2- i hope things get a lot easier for you soon, Rich, for your own sake! Hate to see you stressed 🙁
For "Lexa Dumas" I feel quite certain that is indeed a reference to that guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandre_Dumas – you will note that his paternal grand mother had an African background.
I had commented on it when she was introduced. Though maybe I was a bit too subtle about it…
someone: You’re kidding about the subtlety, right?
(I noticed – but with this story I’m making an effort to read *every* reply.)
t!
Also, the speech bubble in the first panel doesn’t seem to be coming from Capt. Carruthers
Looks like someone took the No Sense of Humor disadvantage for 10 Character Points, which she then invested in Sword (Rapier)!
Yes, I play a lot of GURPS. Why do you ask?
If she were the star of a cop show, Lucas & Cadugan would be the arrogant FBI jerks tromping in to take over her case.
I wouldn’t have a sense of humour about that, either.
t!
Oh I think she’s established she has jurisdiction here !
Or she’d be the humorless local sheriff who keeps getting in the FBI’s way because this is "[my] town!"
Oh great, now I am seeing Lucas and Cadugan as Muldur and Scully. Conspiracies and a cigarette smoking man lurking in the background coming up?
Well GURPS is the best system out there.
One time as a GM a player gifted me by taking the Bad Luck disadvantage. Let us say he earned the points he got from that one. <Maniacal Laugh>
Except she doesn’t totally *evil chortle* that’s why King Runtherd sent the trio, as HE has jurisdiction, in the original meaning of the word. I wonder if she has realized that yet.
I admit i don’t care for her, as a person. That’s both subjective and from using outside knowledge. But i find myself hoping she really is concerned about the truth, and is not just thinking she is.
Thank you, AlyxVixen, for the important reminder of the reason for the prejudice, btw. I am hoping Captain Carruthers can get beyond that as well, if only to see that some orcs can be subtle, devious, and intelligent in their murders, as well as uncreative and direct.
Ok, this was supposed to be a reply to her having jurisdiction, not about her taking her responsibilities lightly. I admire how t! and Rich emphasized that as one of her aspects, and respect her as a person and character for that. Also for the fact that she was willing to go up against Maula 🙂
as for her laxity… It depends on if she even bothered to consider anyone else. If so, and she has her reasons, great, understandable. If not… Then i’d consider her remiss in her duties, or missing something important. So we will see.
But i’ll fully admit i am disappointed she already knew of the familial connection. I was looking forward to the revelation. *sigh*
*makes popcorn and pours a drink* oh this is going to be like watching Criminal Minds
Without as much talk of psychology.
Mmmm, popcorn. ??
However much he may favor free speech, Lucas is right to stop Cadugin though…Sarcasm, or any other form of humor, will be completely lost on someone who takes themselves so seriously. They don’t receive humor very well especially if it seems to be, however subtly, directed towards them.
As said by the comedian Gallagher people should speak up when they see something that doesn’t make sense or is just fundamentally wrong…Unless saying it is likely to get you killed.
As much as I detest censorship, there are others who are more than happy to censor others & might be willing to say or do *anything* to shut someone up; the good Captain there seems to be rather touchy about "free speech" at the moment & it’s best if one does not press one’s luck. Besides, it can be far more satisfying to get the message through to those who most *need* to hear it by using official channels or backdoor methods…So that you’re not around when they hear it.
Have your family fever? Miercoles, that sounds bad.
I hope no one of yours had the Covid
Oh no worries, Alan! "Cabin Fever" is an idiom. An expression that refers to when you’re stuck somewhere and can’t get away. You’re going crazy because you just want some kind of change. Nobody here got COVID and we’re slowly getting vaccinated, one by one. We’re physically okay. Promise.
Sending lot of good wishes to you Rich, and the family.
Even making a gesture of pulling a weapon on unarmed Nobles while in the presence of three, definitely armed, Royal Guards who are there to protect said Nobles, does not speak well of the Captain’s intelligence or common sense.
Picture that in Panel Three she’s casually moving her hand over and beyond her belt buckle, sort of an Alatriste "I beg your pardon?" gesture.
Then Lucas makes a sudden, explosive movement.
It’s less a case of intelligence than it is instinct triggered by high tension.

I really can’t say I care much for this Carruthers. We don’t know how familiar she is with Cadugan and Lucas or their history, but now matter how you cut it, she’s either an idiot, a bully or both.
If she doesn’t know a thing about them, and just sees them as two out-of-town nobles waltzing in on her case, then antagonizing and threatening them like she’s doing is just stupid – Elegrost has been ruled by an overbearing paranoid king for years now, for all she knows these two nobles (here on his orders) are cut from the same cloth and might have her executed for the insult.
If she’s familiar with Lucas and Cadugan then she’s probably also aware she’d most certainly be dead without the very large role they’ve played in not only both legitimately good people, but could also most likely kick her ass if she did attack them after everything they’ve been through. So again, stupid – unless it’s because she knows they’re good dudes who wouldn’t punish her or rat her out to the king for it, and is taking advantage of that to act like a bully.
At this point I’m hoping she’s one of the culprits personally.
Shoving aside emotion and a rush to judgment, an honest review of Carruthers’ behaviour thus far shows her to be inelegant and ungracious – but *not* antagonistic.
Cadugan is the one crossing that line. And he is stopped, quite rightly.
Which is of crucial importantance, because for all the paradigms in play that you listed, you omitted a huge one.
To understand that paradigm is to recognise that she is not being threatening, either.
t!
(messed up the third paragraph somehow, should read "she’s probably also aware she’d most certainly be dead without the very large role they’ve played in saving both Elegrost and the world on more than one occasion" before going on to them being good dudes and all, can’t edit it though)
If they ever bring back magic maybe in another arc 10 years later, where magic is a bit stronger, a ameatur mage and the greatest current mage in the land, which is like a average normal mage for reg dnd, ie:basic sopells, like lightning, and a bit of other amgic. Then they gotta find items and try to open a portal to the beyond to draw in more magic. Maybe ranna can return and old characters brought back. Also there can be monsters leaking through the portal.
