The storyline is another cadagun and lucas mystery…I wonder if the king is going to ask them to solve something or if someone is going to be murdered at the castle (maybe making runt even more paranoid)
Well, there’s been a lot of set-up around the tensions between orcs and goblins, so I think we can expect something deadly or symbolically significant.
I agree with the others, Cadugan looks unusually short in the last image, almost halfling height to Lucas. I did a comparsion by straightening Lucas and the top Cad’s head is level to the midpoint of Lucas’s chest. So about head and half shorter.
Alaria fell hard for Thomas the Bard, who had rescued her from Lady Vivay when King Runtherd could not. (And, perhaps more to the point, who was Thomas the Bard where King Runtherd was not.)
Runt, we can assume, did not deal well with heartbreak.
(Also, it’s worth noting that Charles’s friend Louis and his family were last seen headed for Lanly, where Alaria is presumably still Crown Princess, or if her father died or retired in the last decade, Queen.)
Okay, I seriously can’t tell what the difference between what Cadugan is wearing and what Lucas is wearing, other than Cadugan’s jacket is shorter and he’s not wearing a cravat-necktie thing
And the way Lucas is reacting to even *that* slight difference makes me think Runt has gone full-on Howard "The Germs are Everywhere" Hughes and exiling (or worse) anyone who displeases Him
Cadugan’s jacket is short and he’s not wearing a waistcoat or a cravat. In the world of the royal court, you are expected to be formal and fashionable. What Cadugan is wearing is casual.
Some years ago PBS had a documentary of the rise of Louie the 14th (the "Sun King") showing how he used Court Fashions as a political tool to keep his nobility under his control.
Interestingly I read Lucas’s expression entirely differently. I saw it not as shock and worry ("Crap ! What is Runtherd going to say !") but happiness, nostalgia and attraction ("Oh he looks as handsome in that outfit as he did the first time I saw him wearing it ")
Ahhhh, good old salty Cadugan. I like it when he gets like that, which has been rather rare lately, since the world nearly ended and all. Too many other things to worry about. I hope we get more salt soonish!
You had me at "By Taras Stasiuk and Rich Morris." 🙂 Art style? Do whatever you like! I dug the construction lines, but as long as I can follow the action, I’m happy — and I’m having absolutely no trouble following the action.
Can’t wait to see where the adventure leads! Go, both of you!
Rich pokes me in 2009, I’m amazed/flattered/excited, we exchange a few ideas by email…
And then, every coupla years, it comes up again, with fun and lengthy email exchanges… for a few weeks…
This was the time, though. For certain. He wanted to use the Mystery to introduce the new Era, I thought it was the perfect opportunity, and for personal reasons it was a really, really good window for me to devote the proper time to it – so here we are!
Absolutely delighted. It is a position of honor, indeed, and I cannot think of a better-suited collaborator for a first-collaboration-of-the-new-era!
Also, in regard to your "being careful what you comment upon" earlier…yes. Yes, I understand completely. It’s an interesting position, isn’t it, when you’re not sure if simply having an opinion at all constitutes a spoiler, from your vantage point?
Again, congratulations, and forgive me if I mostly quietly squee and grin, watching this story unfold. Thank you so much for contributing to Our World, as it’s now subtitled…and thank you, Rich, for bringing us a formal and credited t!/Rich collaboration to usher in the new era!
> It’s an interesting position, isn’t it, when you’re not sure if simply having an opinion at all constitutes a spoiler, from your vantage point?
It’s less a question of spoilers in my case than a question of… I’m not even sure what to call it. Vanity? Conflict of Interest? As co-plotter/co-scripter, any comment on that aspect is in essence a comment on my own work!
the lines are really crisp, I’ve gotten so used to the sketched out look that this is messing with my head. it looks good, it just feels unnatural. this reminds me of that time American Dragon Jake Long changed it’s art style half way through the series, never liked the skinny version, he looked kinda like a crack dragon you’d see in a back alley.
Well, their arrival at the castle won’t be instantaneous, certainly… It likely wouldn’t hurt to let Cadugan wear "traveling cloths", and bring his high-court outfit with them to change into on the final approach. Generally, if a court is that much into high fashion, they let those arriving ‘freshen up’ and change into court attire before the actual audience/meeting with the ruler. For that mater, depending on how long it takes to get there, and whether they are riding, or taking a formal carriage, Lucas is likely over-dressed for the travel portion of their trip. If those ARE their traveling cloths… then the fashion at court has gone WAY overboard and poor Cadugan is going to HATE every moment at court. *wry smile*
Uh oh… I see some discussions between Lucas and Cadugan looming again. Personally, I think Cadugan is still way overdressed for an untamed forest creature, so I get the impression he has either compromised a lot already, or has changed a lot. Love nakes one do strange things…
I’m loving this. Considering my track record with previous mysteries and plot twists in this comic, I am nearly 100% certain all my forthcoming guesses will be wrong–and I’m okay with that. 😀
I love the clothing.

Maybe… it will be regicide, and they have to figure out who *wasn’t* involved

Never forget where you come from
Is it just me or is Cadagun shorter?
Yeah, the last picture looks… weird
Was going to say the same.
Cadugan has always been short. He’s half-Elf.

I confess I’m not the most consistent. But Cadugan is supposed to be around half-a-head to a head shorter than Lucas.

My calculations differ from yours. When I straighten Lucas up, Cadugan comes up to his throat/chin area. A Halfling would only come up to his belt.
Castle Gloom n’ Doom? Oh dear. I have forgotten what did happen to Alaria? No happily ever after?
Alaria fell hard for Thomas the Bard, who had rescued her from Lady Vivay when King Runtherd could not. (And, perhaps more to the point, who was Thomas the Bard where King Runtherd was not.)

Speaking of Maran, i wonder how the whole werewolf thing has played out for her and Lucas…

Thank you for explaining

It’s exciting to see the change in ambient. Is familiar but new.
New art style is weird. Maybe add shadowing or something? Or would that take too much time?
I’m experimenting with shading for next week’s set. It’s hit and miss I’m afraid.
If their world develops anything like ours, there’s less and less untamed forest.
I am enjoying the new style(s) in the comic.
I can’t wait to see where this goes!

A certain difficulty with compartment separation, between "observer" and "collaborator." Yes indeed.

Btw, nicccce shot of Cadugan in the 1st panel 😉
