Its not the fall the hurts…

    Well, that answers THAT question.

Damn, was hoping the side-sails would at least act as wings and slow the decent!

It’s clearly visible they ARE slowing the descent. Just not much.

I was thinking more like glide on a shallower angle

It seems that the glide ratio is about the same as an unpowered F-4 Phantom… About a 1:1 ratio… A bit better than a brick…

Best hope for the folks at the tomb would be for the remaining clouds. that Louie could still stand upon at last, to have cushioned the fall somewhat. As for the ship, do the sales have an "emergency parachute" setting?

Another way to look at this is, if there is little to no magic, there’s not much need for mages and wizards anymore.

"Cheer up, folks! Our lives are not meaningless! Now that magic is gone, the people will need new ways to further their knowledge, and to make progressions. We shall fill that spot by exploring the world around us, making experiments, and inventing all kinds of gadgets! From now on, we will be … Scientists!"
"But, doesn’t that mean, that we will have to understand what we are doing?"
"Nah, its enough if people THINK, that we understand it. What is important, that we can sell our gadgets well enough."
"But to achieve that, won’t we need to be good with math at least?"
      "Oh, ehm… Crap…"

As more aspects of Lewie’s old mortal personality resurface, I can definitely see him making a name for himself as one of the great scientists of the next Age, to the point where his prior existence as a lich is remembered as a strange bit of backstory to his REAL career.

Hell, unlike Eddy, Lewie is probably even good at math.

Well, if I recall correctly, Phoenix ran an orchard and an Inn and had a wife and kids and a full life without any need for magic. I hope she survived.

Rather wish that Meegs was still around. Watching her flip her shit upon learning that magic just ain’t what it used to be would have been glorious to behold.

Agreed. Now it seems she is probably *super* stuck as a statue beyond even the thousands of years that was confirmed.

In the glimpses we’ve seen, the future people seem to know about magic; it’s just far weaker than it was. So between the possibility that the planet’s ambient magic may gradually recover, and that scientists might grow really adept at leveraging even weakened magic to accomplish impressive things, I still hold out hope that Meegs might still have the chance to annoy the future denizens as only she can. (And Celena too, though even in evil mode, she’s less of a handful than Meegs.)

We can’t assume they’d be predisposed towards evil the way they were under their god curse. Meegs was never "Evil" she was always just rather self serving until she became a gorgon. We will see. She does make a rather fetching museum piece at least. There are worse fates.

Was Ch’Thier’s tomb hovering over anyone important at the time it fell?

Physics is a harsh mistress. It doesn’t care if you believe in it or not, rules are rules.

In the face of the cruel dark mistress that is Gravity, many began to wonder if maybe they should have taken their chances with Rama. Sure she was an evil chaotic war-goddess of chaos..but at least she could be bargained with…

When I first glimpsed your comment, my mind latched on to "Gravity" and "dark matter" only to realize you said "dark mistress". Oh well.

To be fair I’m quite sure they consider their terminal acceleration to the ground a ‘dark matter’ indeed

    Also…

I knew that was going to happen. I wonder how many of the people in Ch’Thier’s Tomb and on board the Azure Osprey will survive the sudden reintroduction of gravity into their lives?

    • mucat
      October 19, 2020, 7:45 pm | # | Reply

I’m guessing they will survive, suitably humbled by the harsh lessons of physics. "Conveyance falls, everyone dies" isn’t as interesting a story as "mages and skysailors get their first real taste of humility, and must deal with the aftermath."

Then again, Rich can make a LOT of stories interesting, and in YAFGC plot armor is unreliable at best, so I’m still quite worried about our little cartoon people…

In the absence of effective magical healing, I’d imagine many of the survivors may bear permanent injuries…

well technically that was a magical spaceship, but yeah, same principle. Also, it primarily crashed due to (Spoilers for late issues of Elfquest) Some trollish interferance.

What I really love about this is we’ve cut away from Ch’Thier’s tomb, and we don’t know how much time has passed between this strip and the last.

Which means *anything* could have happened in the meantime.

    Including… nothing.

It always made me wonder if there maybe some truth to "magic", as in, perhaps, people were able to tap into quantum physics, I sing rituals and " spells" to focus their minds in such a way to manipulate reality on the quantum level…

If so, Lewie sure could have used some "Quantum Foam" to cushion the fall of that tomb!!

Hmm. Magic skyships don’t work anymore, but beholders still do… age of dirigibles, anyone?

I certainly hope there weren’t that many flying objects floating around near settled areas, or this is gonna be a bad day indeed.
