I am not surprised, as she has seen that her son has the mettle to lead. That, and think of all that she has gone through. And another thing we need to remember is that she originally turned down the crown, and had to be convinced to take it.
Maula Bloodhand was a good ruler, and has earned the chance to step down from the responsibility.
Perhaps she plans to go on a quest to stop the Rannites and want’s Glon to stay as a backup incase it doesn’t work.
Huge difference between ‘resigning’ and ‘passing the torch.’

"Oh, uh, so hey, guys? Know how I said to forget everything I just said because I’m not your king after all? Well, my mother, the queen, just abdicated. So… I guess I am your king.
"Anyone remember what I said earlier?"
He hasn’t said anything except "Mom?" after being informed Maula was approaching. He didn’t tell the audience to forget about his speech.
And I suppose Maula will get to finish the speech for him, announcing that she is going into retirement and confirm that she handed power over to her son Glon.
Actually I was continuing a comment I made at the time.
And he had made a quite lengthy speech, that some felt was dragging on.
It makes sense. After all, a queen-mother can be far scarier than a queen. *evil grin*
She knows nothing of the doubts he expressed in the Library.

Yes. And so, so beautifully abdicated. As a mother proud of, and believing in, her son. Gently, because that was the one weight of that crown she could spare him.
Lots of responsibilities will be waiting for him as king.
Maula was Queen Under The Mountain. Now the Black Mountain is gone, and so is her Kingdom. Glon can be King of "Whatever Comes Next". 🙂
