Could come back round to bite her if she ever had children who inherit the title. Better for her to not risk having any children…

She’s not even a duchess. She’s a puppet installed by a tyrant who’s power is rapidly failing. At best she’s a well dressed squatter, and her time shall come.

Well, it really depends on how we look at it. On one hand, rulers come and go, and sometimes they leave by other means than death -see Karak for example. And rulers have this habit of giving and taking titles as they fancy. The titles acknowledged by the current ruler are the ones one should see as valid. So the question is, who rules these lands now? If we want to be honest, the rannites won the first round, they conquered every important place, and that would make Agaera the queen and Niko the duchess. Also considering the fact, that Runt is not blood-related to his predecessor and was placed on the throne by Eddie, it is arguable that he has more right for the crown than Agaera… Lucas is a different case, because he was adopted, but as I said, titles depend on the ruler.
On the other hand, there is still a significant resistence. It is quite scattered, but it is there. The war is not completly decided yet, and so not everyone would see Niko as the duchess.
How the ghosts see her, I think depends on whether they will take sides or not. How much will they like her, is a different matter though…

True, though with the ghosts taking sides, there is at least one ghost I can see as definitely against the Rannites. Owen.

But a duchess can also be a baron(ess).

Different types of nobility. Baron(esse)s are owners of land, which they have personal control over, while being a servant to the Monarchy.
A Duke or Duchess is second only to the Monarch in power.
The difference is a Baron(ess) buys the land they control from the Monarchy, a Duke is granted control over a large section of territory, which likely contains several baronies.

Which would mean that in order to be a Duchess, she would have to be a Baroness several times over. At the very least she’d have to own the land the castle sits on, and that would be a Barony title.

You can’t be a Duke and have no land.

Oh you can. The UK has a bunch of duchies that ended up landless.

Well, there is one way to test it. Time to trick the lycanthrope into eating carrots…

As a side note, it doesn’t matter if she believes in the curse or not, as long as the curse believes in her.

At which point he can point out something else:

"You’re not the Baroness. Which means we don’t recognize you as the lawful heir and lord. Incidentally… we’re ghosts, and you can’t hurt us, and we might not be able to touch you physically… but you can see us and hear us. At night, when you are trying to sleep. Every. Single. Night. And that being said, LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE MARCHING BARON BAND! HIT IT, BOYS!"

Don’t you mean "Werewolves of Greyfort"?

"Saw a werewolf installing herself as the Duchess at Castle Greyfort,
    And her hair was perfect."

With The Fox on lute/mandolin? ;P

        Technically, it’s not a King-sized bed, it’s a Baron-sized bed…But recently converted to a Duchess-sized bed.

I feel nothing short of a full-length, omni-baronial performance of HMS Pinafore is called for.
