You raise a fair point though. I've turned down a sure thing because she was too drunk to make a proper decision before, and probably would again.
Even if you're pouring liquid courage down your throat to get up the courage to ask someone to bed… I'd rather wait until you're more sober to be asked.
I grant you, the next-day, fully sober revelation is usually that I'm the jerk who turned her down the night before, so a new, sober invitation tends not to happen either.
Sometimes I think it's not so much "nice guys finish last" so much as "nice guys never start."
