Swanmays were a form of shapeshifter in D&D, think Wereswans. They would form small lodges in deep forests near rivers and where peaceful (for D&D) defenders of Nature. They were one of the few races that could be Rangers and Druids in 2nd Edition, were a prestige class in 3rd.
Remembered them from D&D, but was thinking they were in one of the Forgotten Realms computer RPG games

i was going to say that the remarkable thing about 3e swanmays was that although they were crap because so much of the book of exalted deeds was so bad they seemed good in comparison
but then i realised i was thinking of the The beloved of Valarian
the book of exalted deeds really was horrible which was a shame after the high quality of the book of vile darkness.
