American butchers usually only make bacon from the greasy, fat underbelly of the pig (which was almost impossible to sell in the fat-phobic 1980s, until a US fast-food chain started putting strips on burgers, and marketing the crap out of bacon, to get rid of this extremely cheap, greasy, cancer-causing meat that no one wanted up until then).
*ALL* bacon made from a Canadian pig would have been "Canadian bacon" to us, and nor is the notion that our pork comes from our own pigs especially exotic-sounding to us (since that’s the default expectation) so obviously we needed a descriptive term for the meat cuts taken from the back of the pig.
It’s MUCH more messed up that your US marketers decided to take a different cut of meat off of USA-born-and-raised pigs and sell it to people calling it "Canadian bacon".

I dunno…As a Canadian refers to Canadian Bacon as "Back Bacon," do Americans say "Back Cheese," or the French have "Back Fries?"
