Cadugan: "Mama Bloodhand." That says a lot about what Cadugan thinks about Maula. Lucas would think the same thing, I’m sure.
That final panel, the look both King Runtherd and Eddy are giving Duke Lucas, so full of suspicion. Are they really questioning the loyalty of Lucas, after all he’s done for the kingdom? Does 10 years of peace not only make a king pompous but forgetful as well?
I don’t read their look as suspicion toward Lucas himself…but they may well be wondering, "How will Lucas react if Maula or one of her entourage is implicated?" Which is actually a very interesting question…
Hm. I don’t know… this new style is very nice and clean and actually has lighting now and has it’s charm…
But the previous sketchy style also had it’s own unique charm, and I’m gonna miss it, too. Also, there was just something about it that’s made the human and demihuman characters look prettier? Maybe some details just look better with paler, less clear lines…

I know it’s been done, which is why it won’t happen, but it was because it was done so well that I’d love to see another Gorey rendering! Sorry for the backwardness of that sentence; I can’t figure a way to flip it and still have it say what I mean.
Speaking of art, I’m curious as to the reasons behind the costume/ era change. Is it related to magic dwindling, exploration on the part of the artist, tied in with character development and setting, or…? How did you decide on this era, as opposed to others? I recall you said you had studied French, so is that the main influence, or is it an offshoot/after effect of the War?
I’ve more ?s, because enquiring minds want to know lol
Oops- missed a few words at the end… I meant to put after that you studied French, if the era was mostly a way to underscore political or interpersonal interactions as a theme, as a result of the War or your own message (not the right word…. But I can’t think of it. That you have ideas and viewpoints you want to address and consider- which is one of the layers of enjoyment for me)

I never studied ‘French’ that I’m aware of. I mean, I LEARNED French the language because I grew up in Quebec and it was mandatory at our schools. But I’ve never been all that deeply interested in French history. My parents are from England and I’ve looked into that history quite a bit. Especially during my time in the SCA and because of some of the RPGs I’ve done over the years. I’ve also developed an unrelated interest in Roman history.
The OUT OF WORLD reason for the change in style for YAFGC is that I wanted to move it forward. I wanted to show a progression of time, shake up the stories, give myself a bit of a cleaner slate to wipe away all the Ranna/Ch’Thier crap I’d clogged it up with over the last few years and force myself out of my ‘shorthand’ character designs. With the new clothes I have to think about what I’m drawing again. By the end there everyone was in generic medieval poofy-sleeve shirts and jerkins. This got me doing some research and actual THINKING about my designs. The cleanup style too. Something I’ve never bothered to think about before, that I’ve had serious critique about in the past… I want to try to move forward with it and see how it goes.
The IN WORLD reason for all the changes is: For the last few centuries, magic and the gods have had a sort of …. stagnating effect on the culture and industry of the people. The Ranna/Ch’Thier incident either obliterated or frightened off most of the other gods and depleted a lot of magic from the world (Not all of it. Spells can still be cast, but it’s not something I can use for a simple fix on anything). This has forced the people to get creative with their inventions, their advances… and with this new self-driving spirit the Humans and started working on fashions and things.
Looking at their clothes carefully they aren’t THAT different to what they had on before. The poofy shirts are still there, but they’ve got ascots to tie the collars closed. The jerkins are a little longer and are now waistcoats and the sleeves of the doublets are now part of these new over-jerkins… their jackets. The ruffs and big sleeves are simply decoration on the new look, and their hats are the same cavalier hats, but with three sides pinned up instead of just one.
I didn’t study specifically French fashion for this, though they have almost always been the leaders of such changes. This is an amalgamation of early 1700’s fashions from around Europe. And to be honest, the clothes I was drawing before this were mid-to-late 1600’s European. So… I’m not that far off historically.
One minor change King Runtherd may want to consider, if he wants to take a page from Louis XIV, is to have the lighting cleverly arranged to have himself illuminated from behind. The illusion of light coming from the regent trumps the effect of having himself in the spotlight, and kings would rather see the supplicants well lit, themselves in the umbra of their solar halo.
Eddy may eventually suggest this himself, as a cunning plan involving mirrors.
And now I can hear someone whose name probably rhymes with Baldrick in one of the courts stating "Milord, I have a cunning plan!"

Lucas did personally vouch for them.

Not sure what they’d say about someone in her entourage; that would depend on who it actually was.
I suspect Lucas might be chosen for this investigation as he’s one of the few who could interact in a neutral capacity with all factions.
