Well, the easy way would be to say "Honey, I just got a letter from Eddy! Helen and I are invited to meet with the greatest wizards of our age!" And it wouldn’t even technically be a lie…

"Dammit, Dad, why did you have to pick NOW to tell me how proud Mom would be of my bravery?"

Also, "nothing" is always an option. Rarely GOOD option, but AN option.

Powerful for her experience level… so she picked an unbalanced build? 😀

Or, given Helen is really her daughter, and not adopted, she could be the real reincarnation of Naomi of the legends…

I like that. Sometimes world-saving superwizardry just skips a generation.

    Who is her wife?

Someone we have not yet met, presumably, but it sounds like there may be fireworks when we do.

There’s always that one…nagging…thing you can’t put your finger on–until someone else mentions it.

    Dang.

I’m sure her wife is the understanding sort…"Saving the world, honey. You know."

    Wife? Naomi’s a lesbian?

Or bi. I didn’t give enough information to say for sure and it’s none of our business.

Another possibility is that using "wife" is a relic of translation, both of language as well as of culture. Halflings could have a different attitude to life partners, child raising, and so on.

Yes, for example the word boy didn’t exist in Victorian times. All children were called girls up until the age of about 8 years and then after that you were a man or a woman. All children were also put in dresses up to about the age of 5.

In Japan the name for a baby is Akachan which literally translates to "red girl", for the colour of a baby’s skin and face after birth.

Anyway I think it’s neither of those things, cause y’know, today’s today an all that. Us old fogies just need to get wit da times 🙂

Wow that is nonsense. The word boy existed hundreds of years before the Victorians, and they didn't magically forget it.

A good place to begin might be, "You know how everybody in town thinks the world is NOT being overrun by Evil? Well, guess what?"

Ah yes, planning to bring your child into a dangerous quest. The best request to make of a spouse.

    Whoops. Totally forgot 😀

Huh. I got to admit, after reading that she had a daughter, I did not expect Naomi to have a WIFE. What a surprise!

But then again, magic world and all that, right?

Could be a daughter from a previous relationship, adopted etc. Lots of possibilities.

Considering the humans and half orcs we’ve seen running around the young group, I’d say adoption may be pretty common in this village.

Though if Helen is also a descendant of Noshi (or, especially, if it turns out she’s the true Phoenix), then the chances are good that she’s Naomi’s biological kid.

Which raises a point I was wondering about: what fraction of this world’s wizards are Noshi’s descendants? Is Noshi (and her gift from Ch’Thier) the reason why wizards exist in the first place, or just a famous and powerful practitioner of an art that had already existed?

Good question and here’s a history lesson answer (for anyone interested). Arcane magic was used by the Elves as far back as the 3rd Age (The Age of the Elves) long before there were Human Beings (But it was much less reliable, less powerful and less prolific than divine priestly "magic"). Humans made huge discoveries and advances in the arcane arts in the 4th Age (The Age of Magic). Noshi was made matriarch of the Wizards in the early years of the 5th Age (The Age of Legends).

The Children of Noshi are not uniquely wizards, but they have a more natural connection with it. They learn it quickly, effectively and have an affinity for it. Some of them become very long lived as a result of their heritage -even those who don’t have Elven or Genie or Faerie blood. Many never really use their inherited power, but a lot of them quickly become powerful and obtain positions of authority. Many apprentice their own children which they generally have few of, usually only having -and passing on the blood to- one single child. Some will take on the role of teacher and take many apprentices. Meegs, for example, was Eddy’s apprentice, but she is not a Child of Noshi.

As wizards go they are far outnumbered by ‘mundane’ mages but they are uniquely gifted.
