dude, he tried to take over the mountain once. i think he was aware that he was being evil.
plus, everyone lampshades how evil they are in this comic.
Plus, he was actually cursed in a way that his ‘evil’ turned out bad (as in, failed), it just took being reunited with his sister to figure that out
