    That’s not an issue of depth perception; that’s an issue of tunnel vision. Are we to accept that his scope of view is so poor he can’t see the cliff right in front of him? He’d fall off it every day.

      It's worse than that – if you can move one eye, such as by walking forward, you can recover all the depth information that two stationary eyes would give you.
