Wait, I thought the drow were busy taking over the Black Mountain itself?

It wouldn’t be out of place for them to send a detachment to ensure the Hobgoblins get their asses handed to them. The bulk of Drow forces would be busy with the internal takeover but if we assume they have an army of say… 20,000 overall, sending a couple hundred into the field alongside the Orcs wouldn’t be too much of an investment. Especially since the Drow in Black Mountain likely have total surprise on their side.

But why? Sending a small portion of their army reveals information about which side the Drow are on, but is a drop in the bucket when two (or three?) full sized armies duke it out.

Most likely, because they are drows, and as betrayal in their nature, they expect it from others as well. Therefor they send some units to oversee their "allies".
