3573 – Attack on the Inn
EDIT: 2025/05/05 – 10:03 AM local time: PROGRESS ON THE SPACE YAFGC CONCEPT.
For those just tuning in, I’m seriously considering doing a space version of YAFGC (not replacing YAFGC, just something else I want to draw) and so far I’ve got a pair of main characters, Gen Seul and Cole (Cole is an Orc-blooded descendant of Glon’s in a 60’s-80’s SF inspired future of YAFGC).
Latest update: since I hate drawing spaceships and hardware, it’s my intent to use models and photos to either reference or actually replace those scenes. And I have completed the structure of Cole’s ship. It still needs painting and cleaning up, but I’ll put photos up here as soon as I can transfer them from my phone.
EDIT: 2025/05/05 – 10:18 AM local time: PHOTO OF SHIP MODEL!
Here’s a closeup of the cockpit (lit up!)
EDIT:2025/05/06 – 2:52 PM local time: CAPTAIN FANG!
So my son has been playing in a D&D game with some friends at school, and they’ve had to hire a sailing ship. One of the options the DM gave them was “The Broken Promise” with Cap’n Fang as an NPC! So they chose that one, mutinied and took over the ship! This introduced another of the players to YAFGC, and so he started making a digital 3d sculpt of Fang in TinkerCad! And then he 3d printed it for us!
Isn’t it AWESOME! Thank you RYAN!!!

EDIT: 2025 – 05 – 09 8:55 AM Local Time – HANG IN THERE
Yeah, I am in the process of drawing the next few strips. Sorry for the delay, not gone again, promise!
I did, however, get my 2 weeks notice from my current job, which was a stand-in job while I waited for the Animation Industry to revive. So I’m becoming increasingly, and exponentially, unemployed. Bear with me while life kicks me around a little.
Yeah, 3-fingered man definitely looking more sinister… Plus i just noticed that it's his left hand ! Sinister indeed!
Not that I'd trust Capt Ossia much more…
That angle on Panel 6 is is just amazing.
t!
NOW I am seeing Treasure Island vibe here.
Minus a certain doctor who lectures on why you should cut down on rum?
I think we have just discovered what's more dangerous than coming between mama bear and her cub. Getting between Katherine Louise Steward and her mom.
That's our Katherine Louise!
You said that, lads
It would be such a twist, if these guys turn out to be not so bad. I mean, Cpt. Ossia did kind of steal their share of the treasure, so they are rightfully upset. They might let everyone go once they get the map, and even pay for the rum they drunk…
I only have some doubt.
Was Pew blind or he will lost his two eyes in the near future?
In the book, he's blind right from the start. He's not in it much, as I recall.
Getting trampled to death by the gendarmie tends to cut down on your participation.

I’m seriously considering doing a space version of YAFGC
Hmm. This sounds unsettlingly familiar.
1. An exploratory semi-fanfic leaning on the existing setting(s).
2. Original setting. Not at all bad as such, but would probably be better without being tied to legacy of (1).
3. Much the same, but IN SPESS!
4. Mostly just a pile of pr0n. Do you really need anything else?
5. Futa pr0n.
6. Fading out into oblivion with a sigh of relief.
That’s how Drowtales went, IIRC.
Knowing is half the battle, etc.
Wow! What contemptuous drivel you write!
> 1. An exploratory semi-fanfic leaning on the existing setting(s).
I may be wrong here, but I don't believe it counts as fanfic if I'm the one writing it.
>2. Original setting. Not at all bad as such, but would probably be better without being tied to legacy of (1).
Is that right? That's amazingly prescient of you since I haven't written it yet.
>3. Much the same, but IN SPESS!
Charming.
>4. Mostly just a pile of pr0n. Do you really need anything else?
I'm going to assume you mean PORN because you think maybe I have filters on this site that blocks you from saying naughty words. And this may come as a surprise to you, but despite including the occasional bit of R-rated nudity in my comics, I don't write or draw PORN. So… no worries there.
>5. Futa pr0n.
Unhunh. I reiterate my reply to point 4.
Also: What the hell are you, twelve?
>6. Fading out into oblivion with a sigh of relief.
You're welcome to stop reading this comic whenever you like. But I'm not planning to fade out anything.
>That’s how Drowtales went, IIRC.
>Knowing is half the battle, etc.
Is that a fact? Well, this will also come as a surprise to you, but this comic isn't Drowtales, and I am not Yan Gagne. IIRC.
In conclusion I think that I will return the level of respect you've shown me and invite you to go fuck yourself while I chat with the grownups.
Rich, I really wish I could upvote comments on here. Will you accept a loud "BRAVO!" from me instead?
I will. Thanks! 😀
Okay. I've had a little time to breath and calm down. So let me discuss what just happened here before someone writes me up on the BAD WEBCOMIC WIKI for being aggressive an unable to take criticism:
Though, I know most of you have seen me at my worst before and I haven't wound up there yet, as far as I know
I've had an idea for a Space Future YAFGC for aaaaages. Almost as long as there has been a YAFGC.
Circumstances recently have inspired me, and so I put it out there to fish around to see if there was any interest to make it worth publishing. I was prepared for people to shrug and say 'nah, we're good." I also was curious to see if anyone had any reasons for me NOT to do it. I couldn't think of any -other than lack of interest- but I remain open to any if there are any.
I'm fully aware that it could run out of steam real fast and be a boring flop, like many of my comics on the old "Comix Blog" which didn't go anywhere, or even get finished.
HOWEVER: What I wasn't prepared for, and feel I don't deserve, was being dismissed as a has-been hack who is trying to rekindle interest in a dying property by swapping genres. I have actual STORY and CHARACTER ideas for my "YAFGC IN SPESS" shit. And here's a kicker most of you already know:
I've got ideas for YAFGC world characters and stories in OTHER FUCKING GENRES and time periods. In fact, one idea I had years ago was to hop back and forth along the timeline doing one story in Renaissance, one story in Age of Sail, one story in Modern Times, one story in WWI, and then a story in the Stone Age. I didn't end up doing this because I found the notion exhausting at the time. But I'm not ruling it out for the future. I even played with it a bit when we saw Meegs get stoned by the Gorgon and appeared in a 1930's era museum, and again with the Archaeology special after the Godwar between Ranna and Ch'Their. These are well thought out eras, not trashy drop and kick genre swaps for shits and giggles.
Now. If any of you have a critique… and you want to tell me there's something you don't like, or you find spelling errors (I'm notorious for those) or continuity problems, or even some moral messaging that doesn't sit right, then PLEASE let me know. Write it up and I'll read it and take you seriously. BUT write it up as though you were writing to a Human Being with feelings. I can take critique, but I HATE being dismissed as by an ignorant 5 yr old. People who write shit like that will get replies in kind.
Much as my opinion doesn't count for much, I personally had no problem with your response to Mr. Trollliest Troll that ever did Troll. It was well deserved, within your right and while I do not engage with Trolls myself, I'm pretty sure that it hits differently when such stupid drivel is aimed at your beloved baby (which YAGC is). In short, I pitied Mr. Troll for his hubris in thinking himself wise in his response and found your response both righteously apt and amusing to read.
Regarding your desire for trying out a space setting story, I adore both fantasy and sci-fi – so you'll only hear enthusiastic encouragement from me in that regard. An extra story to read from an already proven creator sounds like a fabulous win to me 🙂
Regarding your dislike of drawing spaceships, you seem to have come to a viable solution already, in particular for a pure sci-fi setting. But just to play devil's advocate, and in case this is intended to be a sci-fi/fantasy setting, what about spaceships ala Disney's Treasure Planet (aka Spelljammer spaceboats) instead? You've drawn excellent sea- and skyfaring ships during various YAGC arcs previously.
Sure your opinion counts! I've actually been braced for smackdowns for lashing out, so it's nice to hear some confirmation.
The idea isn't really meant to marry scifi and fantasy, except unasmuch as it's meant as continuity between YAFGC then and YAFGC later. I mentioned before that I'm not a huge fan of Spelljammer and the whole wooden sailing ships in outer space aesthetic. I'm really looking to delve into a retro 60s-80s … uh… laserpunk? To coin a phrase.
I plan to go really low on magic in favour of unfeasible technology.
Ah, I must have missed previous Spelljammer comments. Fair enough.
Regarding low magic, you know what they say, magic is only science that you don't understand yet 😀 And wacky science is hilarious if done right or played for laughs. (I love how SF usually inspires geeks and nerds (my people) into inventing stuff they see on screen, so it remains only SF until a mad scientist has a go at it and kindly shares their tech with the rest of the world <3 )
60s-80s you say? Oooh that timeline featured the start of lots of classic SF franchises <3 Are you considering wacky and serious adventures ala Dr. Who or Red Dwarf (both superbly funny (and retro in my eyes? Or epic spacefaring drama/exploration ala Star Trek or Star Wars? Alien and Blade Runners are both delightfully dystopian settings and low(-ish) tech besides androids n spacetravel.
Admittedly, my favourite SF films is from the 90s, The Fifth Element (bombastic, retro and fun fun fun to watch).
< "60s-80s you say? Oooh that timeline featured the start of lots of classic SF franchises <3 Are you considering wacky and serious adventures ala Dr. Who or Red Dwarf (both superbly funny (and retro in my eyes?">
Well…. definitely I've considered Doctor Who in here. I've already laid the groundwork for a more detailed crossover since the Doctor actually showed up and interacted with Arachne in an old April 1st strip (when I was doing "The Ten Doctors" on another site) -and again a year later. But thing is, it's like the Beholders, Time Lords are copyright BBC, so I'm a bit waffly about bringing in owned property. That being said, I would LOVE to have a Time Lord as a regular character in YAFGC space. (Yet Another Space Comic? YASC?)
As for Red Dwarf….. Heh, I'm afraid I never became a fan of that one. For one, I'd only just discovered The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy and in my mind it was derivitive. But also, it became popular at the same time Doctor Who got cancelled in 1989 and -in my mind- it stole the budget for what COULD have been better Doctor Who in favour of repeated utterings of 'Smeg-head'. Which I didn't find funny at all. So… no deliberate tributes to Red Dwarf, as I distanced myself from it early on.
<"Or epic spacefaring drama/exploration ala Star Trek or Star Wars?">
Definitely I will be taking Trek and Wars cues. Both were a huge part of my development as a fanboy growing up and they're both so innocuous. I mean, we pay tribute or parody both of them without even knowing it they're pretty much the pillars that modern SF was built on.
<"Alien and Blade Runners are both delightfully dystopian settings and low(-ish) tech besides androids n spacetravel.">
Yup. Again, these are the things that created modern SF. So I don't think I could do an SF comic without even accidentally referencing them.
"<Admittedly, my favourite SF films is from the 90s, The Fifth Element (bombastic, retro and fun fun fun to watch).>"
Yes, well I put 60's-80's as my primary developmental box from where I get all my influences, but really there are a lot of 90's SF and even later ones (I'm a big fan of Firefly) that are equalling important. I can't say that (or if) this comic will have the atmosphere of any of these shows and movies because it will be its own thing, grown from my brain, on the fertilizer left by these serials and films. But I hope they're as much fun.
Not Yasc, Rich. JASC. Just Another Space Comic.
And after seeing that mini, I must insist that Fang shows up. No explanations needed, or even intelligible.
JASC sound like a great name.
And Rich, mixed things (and more in sci-fi) could go to great things.
My friends hate the oriental style and the sci-fy and when they saw samurai 7… Well, they enjoy a lot. And i am very shy to the respect.
In the same line, more or less, when Stan Sakai want to try some new he created Space Usagi when he react some stories from Usagi Yojimbo, explore some ways he didn't use earlie and late return to his more famous art (and he return to it sometimes)
Hey there – and I would not trouble myself too much to deign the author of said 'criticism' with more attention than minimally required. They clearly did not mean to actually contribute and offer their perspective on things – but were (as TLA summarized already) trolling. And with the perceived anonymity of the internet and the ease with which a dedicated troll can make life difficult – those keep coming up like daisies in spring, regrettably much less charmingly fragrant.
I personally might think that the planned design of the starship reminds me of the creative GameMaster I had when he was still doing GURPS campaigns for us, all these years ago, where a pot of coffee (totally true tale!) inspired him create our groups next ship. And while we initially hated it with a passion as it did look cumbersome, absolutely not elegant or sleek and streamlined at all – we quickly came to love it for all the quirks it had.
In short – keep doing what You enjoy if You have the time to create. We are along here for the ride if You will have us! Looking forward to it!
Yes, I suppose it was a troll. I can't help but react badly to trolling especially when I'm used to the group here being such wonderfully sensitive, kind, and yes, even a little bit mature, conversationalists. I guess I've been spoiled when you look back at the discourse we have here.
Thank you for your support, Rraurgrimm. It's readers like you that make all this worthwhile.
> Yes, I suppose it was a troll.
Wait – you mean you're not sure?
Unless I am mistaken/conflating, does this username not already have a history of taking a crap on your lawn? initially under a now-banned username?
And here I thought you were being classy for not mentioning it!
t!
…… THAT GUY? You THINK SO?
Aw hell. I'm not nearly so observant.
Frankly, I wouldn't feel to bad about ending up on 'Bad Webcomics'. In my experience, if there is any quality to a comic, there will be somebody having made a post on BW about how terrible a comic it is and how horrible a person the artist is.
But I'm a bit confused by Trolly McTrollface's comments about Drowtales. Is there some spinoff I'm not aware of? At least the comic I read never went to space (sorry, SPESS), and while such things as airships and mechas turned up they were tied into the setting as being powered by Mana, not motors (and for that matter there is no rule that fantasy worlds must be limited to pre-industrial technologies – though many seem to think so). Nor did I see anything I would characterize as remotely porn (admittedly, I'm European – what's more, Scandinavian – so much of what North Americans consider porn doesn't even register as slightly naughty to me),
The 3D sculpture of Fang is wonderful! It looks like at any moment the good Captain will speak more words of wisdom. 😀
Well… the sculpt is a very wonder.
But it can't deny the only a greatest truth.
¡¡¡THEY MUTINY VERSUS THE GREAT CAPT FANG, THE ONLY AND LEGITIMATE KING!!!
I believe in many things but it's difficult to imagine to be your son can balance that obscenity.
Darker and deep hole in the hell is for the traitors and mutineers 😉
Now, with the good Captain, it is entirely possible that the mutiny was instigated by the captain against himself. After all, he is a true agent of chaos!
Fnordius ain't wrong.
I talked to my son about it, when his party boarded the ship for the first time, Captain Fang was already tied to a mast! So they just finished the mutiny someone else had started. Possibly himself.
"Captain, I must inform you that Sam Starfall is plotting a mutiny against you." –Savage Chicken to Sam Starfall.
It makes sense if you've read Freefall.
Well, Arachne kind of took over the ship while she was on it. I guess the crue doesn't mind it, doesn't care much, and used to it. They know, whatever happens, Cpt. Fang remains their true captain, and nothing will ever change that. It might be just a kind of game for them…
Also, Cpt. Fang was seen many times on very different locations without his crue. Those all could be times after such "mutinies"… 🙂
Oh, and yes. That scult really looks amazing. Now I want one as well…
I'll ask permission to upload the stl file… if he has one.
That would be much appreciated!
Also, if the owner/creator of the file hesitant to share it on a public surface, I am willing to negotiate via private messages as well. 🙂
The plot of Treasure Island?
With no jokes?
Really?
Realy?
Patience young Bosda.
Also: Bear with me, I've been quiet for a long time. I'm trying to get back into it.
Well, to starters Billy Bone dies of a heart attack because his alcoholism before the arrive of his older fellows.
So isn't exactly the plot of Treasure Island.
And without forget than Rich get Excalibur, A son of Ice and Fire and Robin Hood for one of his tales and go very long for them.
Don't tell about lord of the rings.
Sir, I saw this on bluesky. I don’t know if it is a good lead or what not. I do know I love both y’alls web comics (thank you).

Neat, thanks Malcolm. I don't know if I"m a qualified beta reader, but I might introduce myself to Mr.Baldwin for kicks.
Hey, a Space version of YAFGC would basically be Spelljammer.
Imagine Captain Fang in the Phlogiston. Somehow, he would find a bic lighter.
Spelljammer's boring. I want to see what happens when Rich puts a druid through Freeman Lowell's arc from Silent Running.
> Spelljammer's boring.
That and Richard actually said, on this page, he's not into Spelljammer.
t!
Think more of something like Fantasy Flight's Dragonstar or Paizo's Starfinder. Spelljammer isn't really a space theme.
Awwww bugger about the latest bear to move in with you 😞 is it a possibility that you might be able to go back in fall, if nothing else better comes along? I'm rooting for you, cuz those bears can take up a lot of your energy
Oh wow, Rich. You did not need to add hunting for a job on top of everything else. Wishing you all the best with finding a new job soon, preferably in the animation industry. Failing that, a job that pays well, you can really enjoy, and leaves you time to do some drawing.
