Now I’m beginning to suspect an offhand comment I made a few strips back, about Lewie being the "some Collector" who hired this adventuring party, could somehow be connected.
And … Ranna is THE "<i>one of the most evil divine creatures this world has ever known</i>," "<i>the sleeping monster in the crevasse under the curtain of Abynn."
Unless there’s more than one monstrous evil "sleeping" here ..?
Don’t believe Ata would become the High Priestess and slash or Guardian of some evil sleeping monster god
A Guardian doesn’t mean a worshiper. Ata retains the title "High Priestess," but not necessarily OF Ranna. She has a "new" title (to us) of Guardian … I think a few more strips and we’ll find out if she is Guarding the tomb to keep out problems, or Guarding it in service to Ranna.
This may well be Ata’s afterlife reward … Guarding the world from the evil of Ranna. Or her punishment … Servitude to Ranna. Or an alignment change, voluntary or otherwise. Options for interpretation are pretty open at the moment.
Until we get a more clear time synchronization, there’s an interesting question here if Lewie knows his sister is here, and if there’s enough humanity left in him to care about her state.
Assume for the moment that Dewcup was wandering for a summer or so before meeting this adventuring party. That places the ‘present’ at roughly the time Turg answered the Sphinx’s question, or a bit later. "Later enough" that it’s into the time frame immediately "post-Kila" at the end of Lich of the Rings (strip 0800)? When Lewie disappears for a decade (the missing time he implies, panel #1 strip 1401, when he re-appears to take out Jone: Half-Orc) ..?
I’m only speculating that, potentially, this adventure overlaps with the missing decade where we know nothing of Lewie before he re-surfaces out of nowhere.
It was just a random connection against "probably hideously evil artifact" and "oooh, Lewie would want one of those." But Ata shows up, not just a priestess, but a High Priestess, seemingly over her title of "mere" Princess …. hmmmmm. A lot of interesting connections are possible here.
A ‘Guardian’ is more of a ‘Protector’ than a ‘Guard’
Two questions:
Which one landed on their head? (okay, yeah, that was probably Princess D-cup)
Is it just me, or is Ayane snarling behind her mask in the fourth panel?
I think it’s just you Guesticus. Of course it’s possible that Ayane is always snarling behind her mask ^_^ And Ata’s job as Guardian may be keeping short-sighted treasure-seeking adventuring fools from waking Ranna up…"Look, if you want treasures, take whatever you want. Just don’t touch the purple glowing gem in the big statue, because then I’ll have to fight you. Trust me, if ‘she’ wakes up, it will be….bad…for everyone."
Meant snarling because Goldie is her boyfriend and she may be a little possessive of him
