Okay, why the hell do they call this thing a "pudding?" What are they supposed to do, eat it to death?

This may be a myth, but someone once told me that Gary Gygax coined the concept of oozes after eating (and detesting) a black pudding someone had made for him. Ochre Jelly, Green Slimes, Gelatinous Cubes and Grey Oozes were all then imagined up to fill the roster.
