Traditionally Goldkeepers get wiped out in a Coup.

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I don’t get what Nikary’s joke is either.

THESE Goldkeepers WERE wiped out in a coup, regardless of there being a "tradition" or not. I can’t think of any other "goldkeepers" who come to mind for them to be comparing the current ones to.

        Let’s quickly review:

King Quaff The Drunkard was probably not a popular king… most likely related to why he’s remembered with that title. That the Goldkeepers were wiped out "during" this coup suggests one possibility is that Quaff was of the GK tribe, and his clansmen fought to defend him (unsuccessfully).

However it’s also not clear if this coup was successful. It’s described as "during" the reign, not "at the end of". Possibly Quaff was from another tribe, and it was the Goldkeepers trying to overthrow him (maybe because he kept draining the treasury for booze money) but failed spectacularly, leading to most of them dying and the survivors executed for treason.

It’s the kind of joke that only makes sense later. Keep reading until you see me reference it again.

Or he just had a similar raid campaign, than the other orc, who tried to date with Gren at the beginning of the comic – and as the Goldkeepers were described as the "loyal friends", maybe they were the only tribe, who followed their drunk king's orders, leading to their march to the grave. 😛

In this case, the coup might have had more to do with their king with the habit of quaffing too much ale, I think…
