Well, Megs is dead for sure now. There’s a goblin around who will have something pointed to say about someone who helped imprison/torture her then seduce her boyfriend… In front of her. By say I mean speak with sharp metal actions.

On a related note, is it just me or does the Rana juice make whomever drinks it stupid evil? Megs used to be at least a little smarter than this.

Not saying that Megs was particularly bright or clever before, but she wasn’t THIS dumb, or this inclined for others to steal her spotlight. She could have stoned the bloodhands herself. She didn’t have ANY kind of plan to try and defeat or escape from the behold right next to her, even one of her typically flashy bad ones? No summoning a colossal rabbit?

Well, the other beholders weren’t getting ready to zap her -yet. With this move, she bought some time at least. What comes next, is an other question.

On a side note: I can’t remember ever seeing Meegs’ eyes before…

Rancourt covered the way Ranna and her agents operate in great, insightful detail. You should read it.

I observe two things about Meegs, here. One, she has always seemed adverse to effort, and two, she tends to favor the path of least resistance.

Magic, for her, seems to be a great big "easy button," and from the sea serpent lasso to the modified and parody-splendid Sorceress’ Assistant, I see evidence for one to make the case that thinking ahead to consequences beyond the immediate is not something she always, or even often, does. I suspect she’s regarding Ranna as "the new boss," and simply laying low and following the path of least resistance, as she often has in the past. She cares about the direction the wind’s blowing today, and the direction she thinks it will blow next…but she likely wasn’t prepared for this moment because she never thought a beholder and a grell could place her into a position of disadvantage, in the first place.

That’s not to say that she might not be able to get out of this mess, for the time being. Just that it doesn’t surprise me at all that she wasn’t prepared for her plans to backfire, and that she overestimates herself as an on-the-fly strategic planner.

(Also, t!, I am honored and grateful for the shout-out.)

And that is how Meegs will be memorialized: as a statue with robe pulled back, but nude otherwise. So realistic people get a little creeped out locking at her face and snakes. So realistic because of a beholder’s flesh-to-stone ray.

Not only is a petrified gorgon wonderfully ironic, but it’s actually the most rational and humane way of dealing with Meegs (on the off chance that "rational" or "humane" bubble randomly to the top of anyone’s priority list.)

Until Ranna is defeated and/or a way is found to un-gorgonify people, Meegs is a liability. Once those things happen, she’ll be a kinda-maybe-in-a-manner-of-speaking victim of snakewashing, and can be restored as time and inclination allow…

        September 20, 2019, 8:09 pm | # | Reply

The question is, if a Gorgon is petrified with her eyes revealed, does her petrified visage still petrify others? (Though not Beholders, clearly.) A decapitated gorgon head can do that, so life is not needed for the effect to still hold. It may not be that easy to save her to deal with later, though I suppose they could always throw a sack over the head of her statue.

If I were Meegs, I would be using this distraction to Dimension Door the heck out of there. Booby Style may keep Bob from immediately disintigrating her, but there are plenty of other beholders there that won’t care.

        September 20, 2019, 2:04 pm | # | Reply

I think the fact that Bob chastised Meegs for "foul play" is the single most heartening sign yet that Bob’s still Bob. He was always, as I’ve mentioned, an innocent. Seeing a little of that innocence in a moment as dire as this one is quite the sunrise.

I’m just going to categorically excuse the breast-centrism, because this grand story began with breast ogling, and while it was #480-#481 that made me a YAFGC fan for life…it was Nike who convinced me to give the strip a dozen-plus clicks to get hooked, in the first place.

Face it, my good man…you are favored of all the Muses, but Erato’s nephew, the demiurge of fanservice and breast physics, high-fives you and brags about his work through you regularly, too. I cannot pretend that his handiwork through me is lost upon even me.

Wherein once again we discover evidence that t! and Rancourt, though *clearly* dizygotic, were separated at birth.

When Rich put out the call for scenes/moments that define YAFGC, #480-#481 were the first that came to mind. The others had to be actively recalled, to fight for distant 2nd place.

You are, sir, my Bloodhand From Another Orc Clan(tm), to be egregiously silly about it.

I once described #480-#481 to a friend with, "While your eyes are down there, check out the heart underneath…it’s just as spectacular. Trust me." That’s where YAFGC exploded out of its imagined confines. That’s when Willy Wonka did the somersault without the cane. That’s the point at which those of us who didn’t already know it learned that nothing ahead would be limited to the meager reach of our previous expectations.

            True magic.

            > Iโ€™m gonna go with 272 on that one.

I can certainly see why you would. #272 was where we learned that YAFGC could touch our hearts…and yes, I see why you’d choose that as the point when YAFGC first metamorphosed. I agree that it was a metamorphosis, or at absolute least, a meaningful reveal and a new dimension to the story. I worry I damn it with praise too faint here; it was a very important moment, and I agree, it warrants mention here.

But #272 was, to my own eyes at least, a case of "This is exactly what I hoped YAFGC would be," while #480-#481 was a case of "This is something I truly wasn’t expecting from YAFGC." The heartfelt, beautiful swerve of #272 was one thing; Rich demonstrating that he’d set up the B-plot of this arc to be Turg’s defining moment as poet, philosopher, exemplar and epic romantic, and that the entire fantasy story, the best-the-monster-loot-the-vault A-plot, would be eclipsed by a moment that, while avoiding spoilers, I really, truly wasn’t expecting from a comic about a xenophilic beholder with a breast fixation…

Well, at this point, I had to admit that I *didn’t* know what YAFGC was going to prove capable of delivering. It had just broadsided me, and more, had proven that it didn’t fit into any of the imagined boxes I’d sorted it into, mentally. I didn’t know what to expect…just that I loved it, and loved Turg, and loved the way his story, in that chapter, ended. (It continued later, of course, but that chapter was an ending, and a powerful one.)

For me, at least, this was where I realized that YAFGC wasn’t just capable of touching me, it was capable of broadsided me. I think that’s special in its own way, though I fully grant that others may have found this at other points in the story…and those moments are, for that very reason, every bit as sacred and meaningful.

Well, there is still Barb to do the finishign blow. Or any other Beholder at the scene. I don’t expect any of them to do something, though. :/

Also, there’s a chance that Gren was petrified by Meeg’s gaze and she didn’t try to target Bob. Distracting him by stripping down, however, to give her some extra time to flee seems fair, though.

Huh, Meegs looks pretty hot without her glasses. I do wonder if the *really* thought that her gaze would work on Bob, or if she knew it wouldn't and it was just a setup to provoke his reaction in panel 3 and give herself time to undo her belt. That isn't as fast as taking off her glasses, and if she's lead with that he might have zapped her before she got undressed. As it is, he paused long enough for her to strip.
