It’s Kinda like in South Park when the kids meet God for the first time.
Kyle: I never expected you to look like that!
      God: What were you expecting?
      Kyle: I don’t know, but not….that!

If you’re sentient, you speak the same language as I do, and you’re not trying to kill me, I’m basically automatically happy to be your friend. (None of those things are insurmountable, but they force an evaluation. :P)

If I recall correctly, those weren’t Kyle’s lines, but Mr Garrison’s.

Well technically, sentience is the easy part…You merely need to have the ability to sense your surroundings well enough to act. However, *sapience* is quite a bit harder to manage.

Also, I absolutely love the fact that, so far, every Tempul citizen we’ve met has greeted Glon’s mixed-blood with simple matter-of-fact acceptance. Very clear that Glon’s not accustomed to hearing "half-orc" said as a simple truth and not a slur.

One of the wonderful constants of the YAFGCverse is that there’s beauty to be found everywhere…even when it’s the beauty of a deadly creature about to kill and eat you. It’s difficult for the mouse to recognize, let alone admit, the beauty of the hawk…and yet, YAFGC brings us there, again and again. Just look at all the fans of Cerasta, for example…to say nothing of the late, lamented, and dearly beloved if also terrifying, Arachne.

            March 11, 2018, 11:31 am | #

            Right on.
Which makes sense, because most creatures don’t think of themselves as ugly.
Rich has that ability to present even things that we, the readers, might think of as hideous, from within the viewpoint of the respective being.

(Attempting to battle ego whilst reading flattering comments) I think part of the perception is how things change as you get to know them. When I was watching E.T. for the first time, I remember thinking how scary and hideous the creature was when it was first introduced. But once it became a person and had personality and emotions and a sense of vulnerability he became adorable. I’m sure there was some deliberate lighting effects and angles to emphasize the effect, but …. well it’s hard to say if this applies to my stuff because by the time they get to paper I usually know them as people already. So I’m already drawing them that way.

Now I want to try something scary and hideous to see if I actually can.

          • t!
            March 12, 2018, 11:35 am | #

Oh, man – E.T. is classic for that. The expected great direction, combined with a PERFECT design: long, grotesque limbs and digts – and neck – but wide, wide eyes. (Earth mammals are positively inclined toward oversized eyes. Cuteness as a survival mechanism, think kittens.) So at first we get the creature’s noise and limbs, and gradually we get the eyes and the personality.

If you’ll take advice from someone who isn’t a visual storyteller, Rich, I recommend drawing the scary/hideous thing from the perspective of an outsider, so you’ll be inclined to think about it, and present it, as Other.

For this viewer, the ugliest thing you’ve ever drawn were the Mammoth Breasts.

There’s an entire bespoke backstory to the mongrelfolk of YAFGC. If you haven’t already, check out the Night Queen arc (starting with with #1700) and meet Hu-Hu. There’s a developed, and rather awesome, reason that the mongrelfolk have higher charisma than you might be expecting.

Really? I don't know if I recall anyone *ever* calling Jagers constructs, I thought that "monster" was the more general term for bio mad science beings, with constructs being something more specific.

Glon "seems familiar" to C’rhynne. Reminds her of Lucas or Owen? Or maybe C’rhynne has met others from the Black Mountain crowd?

"Seems familiar somehow" from an older NPC to a PC of mixed heritage almost always means someone used to know someone’s father/mother.
