Unless, but when you’ve got a bunch of varmints you gotta deal with, sometimes you gotta use a descriptor to identify WHICH varmint you’re dealing with first.
‘Pointy-eared’ was the most obvious visual cue he could use to identify which varmint, (whose name he either doesn’t know, or doesn’t care to speak) that he could use.

A point of order: Granted I don’t know the background of these characters, being unfamiliar with the original source material, but given everything we’ve seen, I’m assuming that Hank is a cowboy/sheriff out of the American "Old West". As such, when he speaks, shouldn’t he be using the American spelling of "honor", rather than the original British "honour"?
Yes, it’s a meaningless nitpick. I actually only brought it up because this was the first time I noticed that this comic was using British spellings. Has this been consistent throughout the series and I’ve just been oblivious the whole time, or is this particular strip an isolated case? If I recall correctly, I believe Rich is Canadian, which would explain such spellings. I just find it odd that I hadn’t noticed it before now.
No. The spelling is correct. American lawman honor is do not give the criminal a chance. Bring him in dead or alive. The law is his honor.
Given that Hank is speaking, not writing, the correct spelling is determined by the writer, Rich, not Hank.
I am indeed, Canadian. My parents are from England, so I grew up with -and prefer- the Canadian spellings. I’m not a fan of writing dialect spelling or distortions, I try to capture an accent with the individual’s diction and word choice rather than spell their words phonetically.
You see, I feel that if I were to do that for Hank and his cartoon cowboy speech, I should do it for everyone to make it clear that I’m not just laughing at how silly Americans talk. But then I’d have to decide how my other characters ALL talk. Are they speaking with English accents? Are they Italianish or Germanish? I write most of them the way I talk, but do I need to put Anglo Quebecer phonetics in there? And the biggest problem with that is… I have no idea what my own accent sounds like. It’s my POV. Other people have accents if they don’t sound like I do, which is how everyone in the world perceives it.
Which is ethno/culturo-centric. And that way leads to intolerance. Intolerance leads to fear. Fear leads to hatred. Hatred leads to suffering.
