"Why yes, low-level spells CAN come in handy."

    Actually, Shapechange is a 9th-level spell…

Shape-Change? That looked more like he summoned/suggested on a nearby Dino.
Why would you change INTO a Dino to fight a Dino? I’d pick something more advanced, like an Owl Bear or a Rhino.

Nope. Eddy shape shifted. You can tell it from the 3rd panel. If he summoned a dino you would see him lying between its feet. Bit there’s no Eddy. And there’s no better beast than Ancylosaur to fight of some raptors ๐Ÿ˜‰

Look at the title, my friend. You rolled a Nat 1 on Perception!

The official term is a Thagomiser… or is that just for Stegosaurs?

Shapechange? Lvl 9 spell, right up there with Wish, Time Stop, Meteor Swarm and other nasty stuff. I’m just wondering whether he had cast it already (choosing his normal shape), or whether he cast it now (under duress).

I’d rather say Beast Shape I (that ankylosaurus seems to be only medium-sized), possibly prepared as a Still Spell (which seems to be a reasonable choice, since a polymorph would make for a good escape spell from a restraining situation – as it does here.)

Could be. Given the title ("Shapechange") I still think it is the spell Shapechange… The choice of Dinosaur could reflect the fact that this particular dino hadn’t been featured in the comic yet.

        >> Iโ€™d rather say Beast Shapeโ€ฆ

Would an โ€œDonetellaโ€ spell have worked? Itโ€™s pretty beastly.

Er, no. The dinosaur *is* Eddie’s true form. Being attacked by the raptor has just broken the concentration required to maintain his illusory human appearance.

You have to admit, weirder things have already happened…

I’m just wondering how many more types of dinosaurs will be in this dino-parade. Does BK take requests? If so, do I know any dinosaur (non-aquatic) that hasn’t been shown yet?

    • CelticDragon38
      February 12, 2016, 12:02 pm | # | Reply

The only aquatic dinosaurs are aquatic birds. Are you thinking of mosasaurs (lizards), plesiosaurs (sauroptergygians), and icythyosaurs (used to be lumped with sauropterygians, but probably their own thing)?

Actually, the Spinosaurids are now considered to had mainly aquatic lifestyles. And there’s evidence that Stegosaurs may have regular swimmers.

And no, I’m not taking requests… technically, but I’d love to hear what you want to see.

@CelticDragon38 and BK: It’s great to see people having acquired such expertise outside their careers.

          @BK: I’ll ask my children ๐Ÿ˜‰
But I’m happy to eat whatever is served on the table, and to enjoy whichever (dino)saur you manage to fit into the story panels.

Spinosaurus was semi-aquatic. Different ecological and morphological category from aquatic.

It actually is my career, Llofwyr! ๐Ÿ™‚ Though I study alligators and dicynodonts, not dinosaurs.

Actually, I don’t think this is a sudden level of competency. It’s not like he couldn’t do anything at all at the beginning of the comic.

So Eddy looks like a dinosaur right now.
    Stupid Plan.
Duhr might charm him, as He is a beastmaster.
Or his allies may mistake him for an eben.

I was admittedly hoping for Taidor the Druid to use a similar maneuver during his last fight against the Saurians; their class is even more known for shapechanges, after all. Alas, poor Taidor – I knew him, Eddy!

To be honest, if I hadn’t read the title I wouldn’t have known what was happening. I think it’s because when he changes, the dino is beside him instead of on top, creating the impression the new creature has arrived to chase the dino away.

I had the exact same reaction before reading the title – I was wondering what inspired the ankylosaurus to come to Eddy’s aid.

For being four panels with no text, you did a great job of portraying it (the dino does look like it has been knocked back, not leaping at Dino-Eddy), only change would suggest be to change the angles as the dino on Eddy’s back was facing left (and ‘flipping’ the panel would make it look like it is the same dino)

Ankylosaurs have been my favorite dinosaurs for a long time now, but that last panel makes me love them even more. The thought of one shaking their tail like we might shake a fist is just so perfect.

Understand you are not taking requests, but how about a suggestion for you to look into: Haast’s Eagle and Moa (picture an ostrich or emu with a thigh bone as tall as a human adult, and a raptor big enough to carry it off) ๐Ÿ˜€
