So here we go, my first post and it's a moan ... actually not so much a moan as, hopefully, shining a little inspirational light around ... yes, that's it ... inspirational light.

Anyway, I was wondering if there were any plans to build an RSS feed for YAFGC at all? I confess that the prime motivator for this question is my incipient laziness but, hey, it might increase your site traffic a bit ... certainly make it less likely that numbskulls like me will miss an episode because they got distracted by something shiny.

I have played with RSS, and would love to have one working, but it isn't easily compatible with iStrip, the program I use to upload and publish the comics. There is theoretically a way to sync iStrip to RSS, but I wasn't able to make it work.

I've been very busy with work since the last time I tried, and haven't gotten back to it in a few months. If you happen to know a way to sync iStrip to a feed, or have a friend who can do it for me, then I'd be thrilled to have the help.

I don't know a great deal about iStrip ... ok, I don't know anything about iStrip ... but it might be worth taking a look at how (yes, I was pointed here by Ferret's excellent review) deal with it and see if it's compatible with the way you publish the strip. There are a number of other webcomics that use RSS feeds but I would guess that you might have a bit of a foot in the door with HotS in terms of chatting to them about this sort of thing.

Yeah; iStrip's a fabulous program, for the most part, but it's no longer supported by the (amateur) developer, and the RSS compatibility was left - from what I can tell - pretty kludgy and unfinished. I would really need someone who's more familiar with the program - and has more time on their hands than I do right now - to walk me through it.

Well I've had a quick furtle around and come up with in the Sourceforge forums. It means nothing at all to me but perhaps it might be of use to you?

Heh - that's the info I've been working with when I've puttered with RSS. Following those instructions gets me all kinds of error messages, sadly, and I haven't had the time to go through line by line and figure it out. That, and I have to admit that I've actually never used RSS myself, and have limited understanding of the inner workings.

I love I strip. I use it to host my buddy's comic.

That's great! Do you have any insights on how to get it to generate an RSS feed?

Thanks to Falingard's helpful example, I now have most of an RSS feed up and running. My only issue now is the thing that was making RSS and iStrip choke each other the first time around.

The Setup:

iStrip is a php-run automatic updater for the comic with which I am using the following code:

Strip {$strip.id}: {$strip.title|default:'Untitled'}<br></h3>
{include file='components/txt_date_strip.tpl'}
</b>
<div align="center">
<p>
<img src="{$strip.file}" width="{$strip.width}" height="{$strip.height}" alt="{$strip.title}" />

in order to place this on the index page every day at midnight EST (these are the details from today's strip):

<h3>
Strip 287: Taking Care of Gren.<br></h3>

Sunday, 11th March, 2007 (Today)</b>
<div align="center">
<p>
<img src="istrip_files/strips/20070311.jpg" width="382" height="500" alt="Taking Care of Gren." />

The Problem:

The RSS feed requires the image link to take the format "http://fullsiteurl.com/image.extension" in order to process it properly.

So now, how do I get iStrip to produce a fully qualified (w/http://etc.etc) link from the automatic update? I have no interest in or time to do it manually every morning.

As far as I'm concerned, rss is most useful to know _when_ to click the links, without having to worry about remembering update schedules or regularly checking sites to find there's nothing new up. Other people may use it differently.

Anyway, I was wondering if it would be possible for you to make a couple of changes to the feed? Specifically, get rid of the text message that gets repeated every time (currently it's "I'M BACK!" etc) so we only get the link, and alter the link to be to the actual comic in question rather than the front page (eg "http://yafgc.shipsinker.com/index.php?strip_id=851" - so if people are catching up on a few day's worth, the older entries in the feed are still valid).

Not right now. I gave up on writing my own feed, and it's being delivered from an external manager that scoops page content. I may get back to it at some point, but not this semester (working two contracts and starting my MA).
