What surprises me is that they were registered, then lay low for a bit, then spamstormed us.

Yes, that is odd. Do some sites have a restriction on how many times you can post in your first however many days membership?

Some sites with heavier modding actually examine each new member before approving--you'll notice we have a tool for that on the Moderator Control Panel. So they registered, waited two weeks, then went ahead when they saw we let them in.

Policing new users would in the longer term be nice to have. However, at present we don't want anything in the way pf genuine new users becoming active.

But we don't have access to the library of suspect IPs, so I'm not sure what we could realistically do.

I warmed to it before I got it, hence the thread about wanting to incinerate the spambots. To my surprise, it stays fun after the first 30 or so.
