Actually, Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals probably couldn't interbreed--just a little too different in the genetics.

But yes, the Vikings managed to spread far and wide in their search for loot to plunder, women to rape and men to enslave. They made it to Bukhara (modern Buxoro in Uzbekistan), one of the linchpins on the Silk Road. Runic graffiti has been found up and down the Red Sea. And from the sound of the sagas, they probably made it further down the west coast of Africa than anyone else until Henry the Navigator's crews turned the bar.

And they were far from the only ones. The Massillians (modern Marseilles) were exploring the edge of the ice pack when Alexander has marching on India.

It's a weird, wild, wonderful world. Which is why it sucks that so much of fiction is so bland.

There are stories that only include people of one race and that is fine but...

a) they are less than we realize, as indicated by the posts above

b) it would be fine to make a white only movie about Camelot. The problem is that nobody is making a black-only movie about sub-saharan kingdoms. Or a movie about Spain during the Reconquista, where so many races co-existed.

c) when you are doing retellings, you should be free to mix it up. For example if you are making a movie about classic Thor, sure, keep everyone Scandinavian. If you are making Marvel's Thor, feel free to include any race on earth.

Trying to bring diversity where there was none should not be the goal, but keeping your fantastic worlds monochromatic and your historical worlds deceptively white, is not helping anyone.

Hey, accents can be fun to play with, as a subtle way of coding teams. Watch the old Spartacus movie, with Olivier, Douglas and Curtis. The Romans are all British, and the slaves are American or European.

Bosda: what has that got to do with anything? You're the only one who's brought up censorship of older media. I believe the point here is now that we know better, we can do better.

On the note of accents -- it can be fun, yes, but not when the "good guys" are perpetually coded as the dominant cultural group and the 'bad guys' are coded as a minority group. Also see: , a deliberate choice to use stereotypically 'gay' mannerisms as something to be disdained. Prime examples being Scar from Lion King, and James from Team Rocket in the Pokemon english dub, Peter Lorre in the Maltese Falcon.

And before anyone jumps in to say I'm imagining things, let me be very clear: this is acknowledged as deliberate by studios. It was a direct reaction to the Hayes Code, which insisted that homosexuality not be portrayed, ever, in a positive light.

"Homosexuality was specifically targeted under the euphemism of “sexual perversion”, and the only way it could fly under the radar in films under the strict censorship of the code was by coding villains that way in contrast to the morally upright hetero heroes."

Assigning 'team' accents and imagery makes political statements, whether the viewer acknowledges it consciously or not.

Agreed.
Bosda: this thread is about moving forward with my webcomic. Not dealing with American media in the past.
I'll open a new thread if you wish to have this conversation.

^^^^^^^

If anything could pull me back into forum arguments again, it would have to be Morgana nailing it. ;)
