Fweee:

While the brain does not have nerves, it does have nerve cells. Nerves transmit impulses to and form the central nervous system. The brain itself lacks pain (and cold, heat, and pressure) receptors. There is, however, an outer covering, the dura mater, that does have pain receptors, and when you have a sensation of pain within your head, it may originate from there. It also may also come from cranial nerves.

Even though the brain itself doesn't feel pain, pressure originating from inside (or outside) the head can affect pain recptors surrounding it.

In modern brain surgery, the patient is often given local anesthesia and is kept conscious and questioned while the operation is being performed. An electroprobe is used to gauge potential damage before an incision is made to minimze trauma.

In the Grell's case, I guess it would depend if it has any outer coating or not. Look here:

From this picture, it certainly looks like it has a semitransparent outer covering, the cortical strucures are more hinted at than actaully exposed. Although there is no skull, there does seem to be some outer covering. So Forewarned would be right in his analogy to an octupus.

Here in yafgc, it looks more like an exposed brain. A fully exposed brain would be highly suseptable to infection. But this being a fantasy comic, magic could keep a lot of things alive that nature would have doomed.

I'm guessing it would feel pain.

Besides, I think the brain is protected SOMEHOW, even though there isn't a skull surrounding it. No creature can survive any environment with it's brain sticking out (with no protection).
